Studio Membership FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
How does Studio Membership work?
Studio Membership gives you month-long access to The Oxford Weaving Studio, where you can weave independently in a creative, well-equipped environment.
When you join, you’ll select:
- Your preferred loom - Frame Loom (Medium or XL) or Table Loom (4, 8, or 16 shafts)
- Your membership tier – Independent or Supported
- The month you'd like to begin
Membership runs from the 1st to the last day of the month. Table Loom choice is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
You can learn more about the looms, tools and equipment here.
What’s the difference between the two membership tiers?
Independent Membership (£125/month or £95 with introductory offer)
- For confident weavers who want access to the studio, looms, yarns, and
tools—without structured support.
Supported Membership (£250/month or £175 with introductory offer)
- Includes everything from the Independent tier, plus:
- Two group learning sessions each month (2 hours each)
- Loom rental for weaving at home
Group sessions happen once at the start of the month and again around the midpoint. These will be on fixed dates and shared in advance.
If you can't attend, rescheduling may not be possible. However we're testing this format in July and September to learn what works best.
Is membership suitable for complete beginners?
Studio Membership is ideal for weavers who feel confident working on their own. Many
members have previously attended one of our Intro to Weaving workshops.
If you’re newer to weaving, the Supported Tier provides extra guidance with 2 x 2-hour group sessions. Private sessions may also be arranaged.
How do I book my membership?
Booking is now completed directly on the Studio Membership product page.
Simply:
- Select your loom type
- Choose your tier
- Pick your preferred month
Complete checkout to secure your place.
No separate calendar booking is required.
When can I join?
You can book any upcoming month with availability.
Introductory pricing is currently available for July and September 2025 while we test and refine the membership setup.
What happens when I join?
Upon booking you will receive more details about the membership, our Terms and Conditions and information about attending our Studio Induction.
Before your first session, you’ll attend a 1-hour studio induction, which includes:
- Overview of studio guidelines and how membership works
- Introduction to looms, tools, and setup
- Tour of the Makespace Oxford building
- Key and access code handover (6am–11pm access)
When can I access the studio?
You’ll have flexible access to the studio:
7 days a week, from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM
Come in as often or as little as your schedule allows - whether you’re working on an
intensive piece or weaving slowly throughout the month.
Is support available while I’m weaving?
Yes. The studio is a friendly, independent learning space where fellow weavers (and
occasionally Cass) may be around to offer informal help.
Need more guidance? Choose the Supported tier or book a private weaving session separately.
What if I haven’t used these looms before?
No problem! Your studio induction will walk you through how to use the looms and
studio equipment.
Written guides are also available, and fellow members are often happy to answer simple
questions.
What types of weaving does the membership support?
The studio and looms are designed to support a variety of weaving styles, including tapestry and handwoven, structured cloth.
You’ll have access to:
Frame Looms (Medium or XL) – for tapestry and freeform weaving
Table Looms (4, 8, or 16 shafts) – for structured, patterned cloth
A curated weaving library and shared studio tools can help support your independent learning as necessary. Cass can also offer guidance for additional learning.
Can I join if I already own a loom?
Absolutely. Some members bring their own frame loom, table or rigid heddle looms.
Membership is about having access to the studio, yarns, tools, creative space and community—not just looms.
If bringing your own loom, please contact us to discuss storage.
Can I visit before joining?
Yes! You're welcome to visit the studio by appointment.
If you're unable to come in person, feel free to get in touch—we're happy to answer questions by email at info@oxfordweavingstudio.com.
What yarns are included in the membership?
You’ll have access to a variety of yarns in the studio:
- Sample yarns – small amounts for colour testing and creative play
- Stock yarns – Skeins, cakes or cones available for purchase at 20% off
- Limited yarns – unique fibres and colours in smaller quantities at 25% off (available while they last).
We can also help source specific yarns if needed.
Can I take yarn or equipment home with me?
Studio looms, tools, and shared yarns must stay in the studio so everyone has fair
access.
If you're a Supported Member, you’ll be able to take your loom home as part of your tier.
Note: If you're planning to take your loom home as part of the Supported Membership, a £100 refundable deposit is required. This helps cover the safe use and return of studio equipment. Basic accessories such as shuttles and additional weaving tools are included.
Small samples of yarn and fibres may be taken home for testing. If you'd like to take larger quantities—especially cones or limited stock yarns—we kindly ask that you purchase them first to ensure everyone has fair access to shared materials. Our stock yarns are available to buy with your exclusive member discount.
