Private Weaving Tuition in Oxford
Private Weaving Tuition in Oxford
Private Weaving Workshop
Skill Level: Beginner – Intermediate
Format: One-to-one or small private group
Location: East Oxford
Private weaving tuition offers a focused, flexible way to learn in a quieter setting, with teaching tailored to your loom, your experience level, and what you would most like to explore.
Previously offered as a private weaving workshop, this session is now shaped more flexibly as tailored tuition. It can support complete beginners, improvers, returning weavers, or those looking for help with a particular loom, technique, material choice or project.
These sessions are taught by Cassandra Sabo, a textile designer and hand-weaver working in contemporary woven textiles. Whether you are completely new to weaving, returning to it after some time away, working through a specific project, or looking for help with a loom or technique, private tuition gives us the time to work carefully and intentionally at your pace.
Workshops now take place in Cassandra’s smaller studio in East Oxford. The setting has changed, but the quality of tuition, depth of knowledge, and thoughtful approach to learning remain the same.
What can you learn?
Each private workshop is shaped around your needs. You may want to:
- Learn the basics of frame loom weaving
- Understand how to set up and weave on a table loom
- Get help with your own loom or weaving project
- Explore tapestry techniques, texture, colour, pattern, or finishing methods
- Work through a problem you have encountered in your own weaving
- Learn how to choose more suitable yarns and materials for a particular outcome
- Develop confidence before continuing independently at home
For complete beginners, the session can follow the structure of an introductory workshop. For those with some experience, we can focus more directly on technique, materials, design decisions, troubleshooting, or project development.
You are welcome to bring your own loom if it is practical to transport, or you can work on one of the looms available in the studio.
How much time do I need?
Private workshops are available as either 4-hour or 6-hour sessions.
As a general guide:
4-hour workshop
Best suited to frame loom weaving, introductory tapestry techniques, circular weaving, project troubleshooting, or focused support on a specific area.
In a 4-hour session, you might learn how to set up a warp on a frame loom, explore a selection of techniques, understand how materials affect the finished piece, and work towards a small sample or project.
6-hour workshop
Best suited to table loom weaving, more technical learning, setting up a loom, or working through a more developed project.
In a 6-hour session, you might complete a technical worksheet, prepare and set up a warp, learn the stages of dressing a table loom, explore basic weave structures, and weave a small sample to take home.
These timings are only a guide. Some frame loom projects may benefit from a longer session, while some table loom or project-support sessions may be more focused. If you are unsure which option to choose, please get in touch before booking and Cassandra will help you decide which timeframe is most appropriate.
Your private workshop includes:
- 4 or 6 hours of tailored tuition
- Use of appropriate studio equipment during the session
- Guidance specific to your loom, project or learning goals
- Weaving notes or follow-up guidance where relevant
- A calm, focused learning environment in Cassandra’s East Oxford studio
Depending on the session, materials may either be included, available to purchase, or discussed in advance so you can bring suitable yarns with you.
What is not included?
Unless stated otherwise, the following are not included:
- The Oxford Frame Loom
- Table loom yarns or specialist project materials
- Lunch
You are welcome to bring your own lunch or snacks. There are also local cafés and shops within walking distance.
Before booking
If you know exactly what you would like to learn, you can book the 4-hour or 6-hour option that best suits your project.
If you are unsure, please email Cassandra before booking with a little information about your experience, the loom you would like to use, and what you hope to learn. You do not need to have everything worked out — a broad idea is enough.
