Join us for this fun project-based workshop that teaches you how to design and weave your very own cushion!

Skill Level: Beginner

What will I learn?

In this 4-day workshop students will embrace the slow craft of weaving on a frame loom. By exploring gorgeous, sustainable materials, learning the process of textile design, experiencing the joys of weaving and learning to work with handwoven fabric to sew your cushion together, students will become confident and ready to tackle their next woven project.

Inspired by the handwoven designs of workshop host Cassandra Sabo, the workshop will take participants step-by-step through the process, mirroring her popular online, Domestika weaving course.

Over the course of the 4 days, students will learn practical weaving skills:

    • How to plan a cushion design
    • How to set up a warp using The Oxford Frame Loom
    • Basic tapestry weaving techniques
    • Hand-weaving techniques
    • How to prepare yarns and fibres for weaving, including our Yarn Blending technique
    • How to sew a fully hand-woven cushion together by hand
    • How to wash and care for the cushion

    Who is this workshop for?

This workshop would suit those new to, or familiar with weaving and are looking to hone their craft skills by completing an interiors project, from beginning to end. This is a practical workshop and participants will be weaving for several days, with the basic outline as follows:

Day 1: Designing the Pattern, Preparing Yarns & Fibres, Setting up the Warp

Day 2: Weaving the cushion Front

Day 3: Weaving the 2 cushion Back panels

Day 4: Trouble-shooting, Sewing the cushion Front & Back panels together

The workshop is designed to be fun and engaging, enabling students to get to know their fellow workshop participants while learning all the weaving tips and tricks needed to complete a product. Students will have the opportunity to express themselves while learning at their own pace. Typical class sizes hold a maximum of 8 students so participants will have plenty of individual attention to help them hone their skills.

Want a sneak peek of the cushion students will learn to weave in the studio? Watch the trailer for the online weaving course.

Although we will provide notes for this workshop, we encourage students to sign up for our Domestika Online Weaving Course where we go into depth on how to weave a cushion. There is so much extra content with detailed videos that we simply cannot cover in the workshop and will be invaluable to the student once they leave the studio. Any student wishing to purchase the Online Weaving Course will receive a discount code when they have completed the workshop.

    Looms & Equipment

Students will be weaving on The Oxford Frame Loom, our unique frame loom design that enables weavers to discover their weaving style. They will be working on our XL looms for the duration of the workshop, but will be given the opportunity to purchase the loom at a discount of up to 25% should they wish to do so.

    Workshop Location:

All workshops are held in beautiful Oxford, where our studio backs onto the Oxford Canal and is a stones throw from central Oxford, train & bus stations and on the edge of the thriving Jericho community.

The workshop itself will be held in our studio or the gallery space of the Makespace Oxford building (space permitting).

For those wishing to stay overnight in Oxford and experience what the great city has to offer, we can offer some advice on where to stay and what to do. Get in touch! =)

    Available Dates:

This workshop is held in the studio on a weekly basis over a period of 4 weeks. Students will take their looms home as it is likely they will need to weave independently of the workshop during this period to advance their weaving at the pace indicated.
