Join us for this contemporary scarf workshop to learn how to design, weave and personalise your own super soft and chunky handwoven scarf using the Oxford Frame Loom!

Skill Level: Beginner

What will I learn?

In this 4-day workshop students will embrace the slow craft of weaving on a frame loom to weave their very own handwoven scarf. By exploring gorgeous, sustainable materials, learning the process of textile design, experiencing the joys of weaving and learning to master longer woven projects on The Oxford Frame Loom, students will become confident and ready to tackle their next woven project.

Inspired by the handwoven designs of workshop host Cassandra Sabo, the workshop will take students step-by-step through the process of weaving a scarf, working with a colour palette in mind (perhaps coordinating the scarf to style with a favourite winter coat or choosing Mom's favourite colours!), students will select a pattern they like. Cassandra will then guide students through the yarn and fibre selection process, encouraging students to choose from dozens of colour combinations!

With their yarns to hand and under Cassandra's expert guidance, students will be paired up and taught how to set up a longer warp on The Oxford Frame Loom. Then working with their yarn selection, students will learn a selection of classic hand-weaving techniques and some fun, contemporary ones to personalise their scarf design.

Over the course of the 4 days, students will learn practical weaving skills:

  • How to plan and personalise a scarf design
  • How to wind on an extended warp using The Oxford Frame Loom a
  • Learn basic tapestry weaving & hand-weaving techniques
  • Discover the best way to prepare yarns and chunky fibres for weaving, including preparing Wool Roving and our popular Yarn Blending technique
  • How to advance a longer warp on  The Oxford Frame Loom
  • Learn to weave a scarf, with tips and tricks for a quality finish
  • Discover finishing techniques including overlocking, sewing in the ends, knotting and the blanket stitch
  • Learn how to wash and care for the scarf

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop would suit those new to, or familiar with weaving and are looking to hone their craft skills by completing a fashion project, from beginning to end. This is a practical workshop and participants will be weaving for several days, with the basic outline as follows:

Day 1: Designing the Pattern, Preparing Yarns & Fibres, Winding on a Longer Warp

Day 2: Weaving, Following a Pattern & Winding the Warp Forward

Day 3: Weaving, Measuring the Length & Trouble-Shooting

Day 4: Finishing Techniques, Washing and Caring for your Scarf

The workshop is designed to be fun and engaging, enabling students to get to know their fellow workshop participants while learning all the weaving tips and tricks needed to complete a fashion product. They will have the opportunity to express themselves while learning at their own pace. Typical class sizes hold a maximum of 8 students so there will be plenty of individual attention to help participants hone their skills.

Looms & Equipment

Students will be weaving on The Oxford Frame Loom, the unique frame loom design that enables weavers to discover their weaving style. They will be working on the Medium looms for the duration of the workshop but will be given the opportunity to purchase the loom or upgrade to the XL size, both at a discount of up to 25% should they wish to do so.

Workshop Location:

All workshops are held in beautiful Oxford, where the studio backs onto the Oxford Canal and is a stone’s throw from central Oxford, train & bus stations and on the edge of the thriving Jericho community (a great place for eating & drinking in the city)!

The workshop itself will be held in the studio or the gallery space of the Makespace Oxford building (space permitting).

For those wishing to stay overnight in Oxford and experience what the great city has to offer, we can offer some advice on where to stay and what to do. Get in touch! =)

Available Dates:

This workshop is held in the studio on a weekly basis over a period of 4 weeks. Students will take their looms home as it is likely they will need to weave independently of the workshop during this period to advance their weaving at the pace indicated.
