What will I learn?

Students may have previously taken our Introduction to Frame Loom Weaving workshop or have been learning to weave independently and are looking for the next stage in their weaving development will love this workshop!

In this workshop students will be furthering their skills and knowledge of weaving on The Oxford Frame Loom. Working across the tapestry and hand-weaving spectrums, students will experiment with a number of new techniques to enhance their skill set and expand their knowledge so they are able to add their own creative flair to their future woven projects.

Working in a relaxed environment, students will create a series of small samples, practicing the techniques, taking notes and experimenting to generate as many resources to refer back to once they have left the studio.

Over the course of the 2 days, students will learn practical weaving skills:

  • The difference between tapestry weaving and hand-weaving
  • How to create shapes using different methods
  • Understand and explore Sett using different quality warp materials
  • Learn how to set up an extra warp using The Oxford Frame Loom
  • Explore ways to create a multi-coloured warp
  • Discover new hand-weaving techniques using Pick Up sticks
  • Following more complex patterns
  • Finishing techniques for different project types

Who is the workshop for?

This workshop would suit those who have previously taken our Introduction to Weaving workshop or who have some prior experience of weaving but would like to develop and understand their own weaving aesthetic. After completing this workshop students will have a clearer vision of the direction they can follow to explore and develop their own work.

Participants in this workshop will find it fun and informative, working to create many samples over the course of the 2 days. Typical class sizes hold a maximum of 6 students so there will be plenty of individual attention.

Day 1: Tapestry vs. Hand-Weaving, Shapes, Sett and Warp Techniques

Day 2: Complex Patterns, Pick Up Sticks, Finishing Techniques 

Looms & Equipment

Students will be weaving on The Oxford Frame Loom, our unique frame loom design that enables weavers to discover their weaving style. They will be working on our Medium loom for the duration of the workshop, but will be given the opportunity to purchase the loom at a discount of up to 25% should they wish to do so.

Students who already have their own frame loom are encouraged to bring it along to the workshop.

Workshop Location:

All workshops are held in beautiful Oxford, where our studio backs onto the Oxford Canal and is a stones throw from central Oxford, train & bus stations and on the edge of the thriving Jericho community.

For those wishing to stay overnight in Oxford and experience what the great city has to offer, we can offer some advice on where to stay and what to do. Get in touch! =)
