Mercerised Cotton Yarn - Plied (2/16s)
Mercerised Cotton Yarn - Plied (2/16s)
This mercerised cotton yarn is one I return to again and again in my teaching. It’s the yarn I use in my Intro to Frame Loom Weaving workshops because it offers the right balance of structure, stability, and ease—making it especially well suited to beginners.
When setting up a loom for the first time, having a yarn that holds tension without breaking or tangling makes all the difference. Smooth and consistent, it allows you to focus on the process of weaving rather than troubleshooting your materials.
Based on a 2/16s mercerised cotton and further plied, it performs reliably in both warp and weft. On a frame loom, it creates a stable, consistent foundation. On a table loom, it produces a clean, defined cloth—ideal for exploring pattern, structure, and repeat designs with confidence.
Made from 100% extra-long staple, combed mercerised Egyptian cotton, it has a soft yet structured handle with a subtle, smooth sheen that enhances both colour and surface detail. It is also OEKO certified and available in a carefully developed palette of rich colours and classic neutrals, selected to work beautifully across a range of woven projects.
Each yarn is prepared in either cakes or skeins, giving you flexibility in how you use and store it—whether you prefer to work directly from a cake or keep skeins intact for dyeing.
Beyond weaving, it lends itself well to a range of textile applications. It can be used for couching or as a thicker sewing thread, and works beautifully when combined or plied with other fibres to introduce definition in tapestry. It is also well suited to spinning, where it can be blended with other yarns to create more textured, expressive surfaces. The lighter shades, in particular, take dye exceptionally well.
