Expand your knowledge in this new, 1-day workshop to get to grips with a technical draft plan and design a warp for your next project!

Skill Level: Beginner - Intermediate

What will I learn?

Participants in this workshop will build on their existing technical knowledge of how to plan a warp by introducing or refreshing their knowledge of the 3 main draft plans for hand-weaving: straight, point and block drafts.

We will explore what this looks like in practice through demonstrations on 3 looms set up with a different draft plan, connecting the abstract with the practical. Students will work in small groups and each will be given the opportunity to weave a small sample to see the impact of changing the draft plan.

Students will also be taken through a technical worksheet step-by-step. We will review each aspect of the worksheet to understand the connections between the yarns we choose, the reed at our disposal and our chosen draft plan, all with the aim of planning our next woven project!

Over the course of the day, students will build on their knowledge of a technical worksheet:

  • Review a technical worksheet
  • Understand the impact of our yarn, reed & draft plan choices
  • Connect the theoretical with the practical by weaving samples
  • Connect our research with yarn choice and loom options
  • Preparing a weaving draft plan for our next woven project

Who is the workshop for?

This workshop would suit those who have previously taken our Introduction to Table Loom Weaving workshop or who have prior experience weaving on a 4-shaft loom and are looking for the next step in their progression. It might also suit those who have recently taken our Find Inspiration to Design Your Woven Project workshop to connect new ideas with the technical and practical application of planning a warp.

Participants will find this a really practical and useful workshop, connecting their ideas and inspiration to creating an actionable plan to set up their next warp. Typical class sizes hold a maximum of 12 students so there will be opportunities to share ideas and be given guidance.

Day 1: Review a technical worksheet, Show examples of fabric woven with different draft plans, Weave samples for future reference, Share ideas & explore the starting point of designing & planning a warp, Plan a warp to take home

Looms & Equipment

Students in this workshop will be working both on and 'off loom', writing technical notes and weaving small samples while in the studio. They will be working in small groups and experimenting with new yarns and materials.

Workshop Location:

All workshops are held in beautiful Oxford, where our studio backs onto the Oxford Canal and is a stones throw from central Oxford, train & bus stations and on the edge of the thriving Jericho community.

The workshop itself will be held in our studio or the gallery space of the Makespace Oxford building (space permitting).

For those wishing to stay overnight in Oxford and experience what the great city has to offer, we can offer some advice on where to stay and what to do. Get in touch! =)
