Start your weaving journey with our new Intro to Weaving Series: Handwoven Bookmark Project E-Book!

Level: Beginner

Half of a coloured yarn ball indicating the easiest skill level

This weaving project brings together new weaving skills, patterns & techniques in an easy-to-follow, 16-Page E-Book. From the simple frame loom set up to exploring weaving techniques and finishing off the handwoven project, we share 15 years worth of teaching and weaving experience through the creation of a contemporary handwoven bookmark.

Each handwoven bookmark pattern in the E-Book has been designed for beginner weavers, with lots of practical information for starting out on your weaving journey. However we also introduce new concepts and include interesting 'Top Tips' from our many years of experience that will appeal to weavers at any stage in their development.

What's included in this E-book?

Over the course of 16 pages we give you a comprehensive guide on how to weave 3 different bookmark patterns.

E-Book Contents:

  • What you will learn (specific Skills, Patterns, Techniques & Materials - see below)
  • What you will need (loom and material requirements)
  • Full step-by-step instructions
  • 3 x Weaving patterns for different bookmark designs
  • Glossary (breaking down weaving jargon)
  • Blank pattern templates (for creating your own designs)
  • Notes section for jotting down ideas
  • Suggestions for further learning

This is a comprehensive digital product that is yours to keep. Hopefully you will keep coming back to it to create the bookmark, or to adapt the pattern to create something even more spectacular!

What do you learn in this project?

In this project we introduce 3 different designs for handwoven bookmarks. The first pattern is based on working with a single yarn. The second and third patterns are based on two slightly different designs for working with multiple yarns.

We have broken down the E-book into different areas of learning: Skills, Patterns, Techniques & Materials.

Weaving Skills:

  • How to set up a warp on a frame loom
  • How to read a lifting plan
  • How to tidy & sew in loose ends
  • How to remove the bookmark from the loom (using our favourite technique!)

Weaving Patterns:

  • Plain Weave - The fundamental weaving pattern
  • Vertical Rib - Creating height with multiple rows

Weaving Techniques:

  • Weaving with multiple weft yarns
  • How to avoid ‘drawing in’
  • How to maintain consistent edges

Materials:

  • Cotton macrame yarn (a multiple ply yarn)

If you are new to weaving then many of these concepts will be new to you. We have deliberately tried to keep things simple to avoid the 'overwhelm'! But equally, we have not over-simplified the explanations because we believe in giving you context so that you understand 'why' and can think for yourself beyond following the pattern.

Our new 'Intro to Weaving Series' - A new system of learning at OWS

This is the first project in an introductory series of projects that will take you from novice to expert. Each project focuses on introducing a few key weaving concepts with multiple patterns for you to follow to complete a tangible project. They are designed to help you apply the new skills, patterns and techniques. Repetition is key!

There is also an emphasis on exploring one or two materials so that you can really understand how these materials work both in context of the pattern, but also to give you confidence to use them in other projects of your own design.

We have used a new '3 yarn ball' system to indicate the difficulty level of completing the project. This project is the easiest as it includes some very basic concepts and can be completed in under an hour with little or no experience.

Future projects will expand upon some of the concepts in this project and include completely new ideas for you to explore. Watch this space!

How to use the E-Book?

This E-Book can be read through from beginning to end, in page order, to skip ahead to an area of interest or simply try out the patterns. The skills, patterns or techniques should act as guide to acquiring knowledge with the purpose of first weaving the patterns but then to create new designs in the future.

If you are new to weaving and don't already have what you need to get you started, you might also be interested in our Looms & Tools or Cotton Macrame Cord.
